Carpet Install
Carpet install require all aspects of the installation should
be coordinated.
To ensure the desired performance, the carpet selected must be
suitable for the end use application and intended method of
installation. Carpet install is important to give more benefits
in the room.
Carpet selection
It is important to select and arrange carpet install so it will
be more attractive and effective to give more benefits in the
room.
These below guidance will help you in carpet selection and
arrangement:
1. Select the Appropriate Cushion Type
Usually carpet manufacturer will recommend the appropriate
cushion for specific carpet and applications. E.g. For heavy
use area, finer grades of cushion are recommended
2. Size and Theme
This is very important. Room theme is related to choices of
carpet shapes, colors, and patterns. Cushion types may differ
depend on area requirements and specific needs. For example, if
you want the classic style arrangement, it would be better to
select classic theme carpet.
3. The size and room function
Room size will affect to carpet size. The big difference of
room and carpet size ratio, for example the room is too big
while the carpet size is too small will give unbalance
impression to the overall room.
Proportional size of room and carpet will give attractive
impression. Some good arrangements based on size ratio between
room and carpet: carpet size 1.6 m x 2.4 m will fit to room
with 4mx5m size. Carpet with 1.4mx2m size can be used for
smaller room. Room function is also important to be considered.
If you use carpet to enhance the room function, choose and
place carpet appropriately based on the room function. For
example, carpet in the bedroom is usually placed beside the
bed. You can select 80cmx150cm carpet size.
4. Furniture
Furniture as home appliances has size
and color which will affect to carpet color and size. Use
1.7m x 2.3m carpet size for family room with 3 seaters sofa . For family room with
using 2 seaters sofa or arm chair, you can
choose 1.2mx1.7m carpet size. Carpet color can be chose in
harmony with furniture color or to give.contrast impression,
choose contrast color. Color concept will more depend on
concept of room arrangement.
Indicate the exact area where to install carpet
Prepare diagram with exact measurement.
Total amount of Carpet Install Needed
Amount of carpet required for each location is to be calculated
carefully.
Removing all fragile and other items prior to carpet
install
Special skills and equipment are needed to remove certain items
such as pianos, stereo equipment, electronic appliances,
computer, aquariums, water beds, poll tables. Disconnect all
appliances which require utility (gas, water, etc). To minimize
amount of dust particles, the old carpet need to be vacuumed
before removal. Remember that some of cushion and old carpet
may be recycled. Furniture also must be moved carefully
.
Preparation of sub-floors
Sub-floor need to be properly prepared with proper
consideration given to intended use & installation method
specified. After old carpet and cushion have been removed, you
can use simplicity
vacuums to vacuum the sub-floors immediately. To ensure a
smooth, finished appearance and to prevent accelerated wear,
all cracks, holes, joints, and protrusion must be adequately
addressed.
Presence of excessive moisture emission or alkali during carpet
install has a high risk or failure. The most critical are
carpets with impermeable or non-porous backings in glue-down
applications. Excessive surface alkali can destroy most floor
covering adhesives. Installation using all methods with
excessive moisture emissions may result in mold and mildew
growth and in indoor air quality problems. Sub-floors from wood
material must be structurally sound and dry. Glue-down
installation over pressure-treated or flame-retardant wood is
not recommended. Primer which is compatible with the adhesive
should be used to coat the metal surfaces. Rapid oxidation or
other chemical reactions will happen if adhesives applied
directly to bare metal surfaces. Many resilient floor coverings
contain vinyl plasticizers. When carpet adhesives is applied
directly to these kind of floor, it may soften or liquefy over
time, causing widespread failure. This chemical reaction is
referred to as "plasticizer migration." Existing finishes on
the tile must be removed prior to direct gluing the carpet.
Carpet to be installed
New carpet to be installed must be vacuumed using high efficiency vacuum cleaner.
Indoor Environment (Room temperature, Humidity, Airflow)
48 hours before, during, and 72 hours after application, indoor
temperature should be maintained between 18°C(65°F) and
35°C(95°F) with Relative Humidity (RH) below 65%. Maintain
temperature >10°C (50°F) regardless of the age of the carpet
installation. New carpet usually has odor. Adhesives or hot
melt seaming types used for carpet install also may have an
odor while they are curing. Provide good ventilation to get an
adequate fresh air. Open the doors and window to increase
airflow. Exhausting to the outside and avoiding
recirculation.
After Carpet Install
To allow proper adhesive cure, traffic over adhesive
installations should be restricted for a minimum of 24 hrs.
Exposure to cleaning & other sources should be restricted
for a minimum of 30 days. Premature traffic can cause adhesive
to migrate, causing localized bond failure. Exposure to water
from cleaning or other sources must be prevented for a min of
30 days. Disregarding either of these precautions can result in
the eventual failure of the adhesive bond.
Important Note
In the absence of spesific instructions from manufacturer to
the contrary:
*unitary backed carpet should not be installed over a separate
cushion.
*carpet should not be installed over existing carpet.
Carpet Install On Stairs
Carpet install on stairs basically has two
methods:
1. Cap and band installation.
The cap is a piece of carpet installed over the treads and the
band is the piece that will cover the risers.
2. Waterfall method
This method uses one piece of carpet to covers each riser and
tread.
Below instruction is carpet install with waterfall method for
basic stairs, not for spiral stairs.
Some tools needed for carpet install on stairs:
Measuring Tape, Tack strips, Staples or upholstery nails,
Hammer, Knee Pads, Knee kicker, Stair Tool, Utility knife,
Safety glasses
Substrate Preparation
The old carpet need to be removed. Take out the tack strips and
the old padding. Make sure to remove any nails and staples and
sweep down the area where carpet will be installed.
Total Amount of Carpet Install Needed
It is important to know exactly how much carpet is needed
before carpet install. Simply measure across the tread to
calculate the width. For stairs which open on one or both ends
make sure to measure under the nosing to where it meets the
riser and add it to the total width. Measure the tread and
riser to determine the total length of the flight of stairs.
Add at least 3 inches for each stair if carpet pad is used and
add one foot to the total flight measurement if the steps have
nosing .
Carpet Install Process:
* Apply the tack strip to the stair crotch location. Use a knee
kicker to tighten the carpet by tucking in the crotch. Knee
kicker is a piece of metal tubing with a pin plate attached to
it. On the other end it has a padded cushion where you can
position your knee to give pressure to the carpet. This tool is
usually used to install carpet in small areas and stairs.
Simply place the padded end several inches above your knee and
give pressure. Knee kicker is also used to attach to the tack
strip to stretch the carpet straight from the center of the
tread and hook it to the tack strip located at the crotch.
* After the carpet has been hooked to the tack strip you need
to firmly attach it by sliding your carpet tool back and forth
to compress the pins. Carpet knife is better than utility knife
as it sharper and has two sides. Repeat this process on each
side of the tread. Make sure the carpet is smoothed out on the
riser and then staple to the stair lip before going to the next
tread. It is recommended to staple about every 2 inches and
staple along the edge of the riser.
* Continue to the next tread if everything looks good. If not,
pull the carpet off and install it again. Repeat this process
until carpet install process is finished.
Important Note:
Carpet backing and substrate must be compatible with adhesive
selected.
* Adhesive installation over pressure-treated wood is not
recommended.
* Carpet installed on stairs must be tight, smooth, and neatly
finished without wrinkles, puckers, or indentations.
* Carpet should only be installed over steps with a rounded
nosing with a radius at least 3/4 inch (19 mm).
* When carpet is installed over a separate cushion, the cushion
must extend over the stair nose.
* Seam adhesive must be applied to all seam edges of tufted
outdoor carpet, including all exposed edges.
* Carpet length should be installed parallel to length of
stairs.
* For outdoor staircase, select carpet recommended for outdoor
use.
* All outdoor installation surfaces must be clean, dry, sound,
cured, smooth, and have adequate drainage.
