How to Clean A Sofa

A lot of sofas (sofa 2 seaters, sofa 3 seaters, arm chair/arm sofa, or ottoman) are used for living room, lounge, family room, or as garden/outdoor furniture. Sofa has become part of people life style especially at city areas.
Many ways to clean a dirty sofa will depend on sofa types. Commonly sofa’s cover will last for 5 (five) years. It is better to change the sofa’s cover after 5 years.
Sometimes sofas are often use but not being taken care properly, sofa is in dirty condition so sofas will not be a comfort place again for sitting down.
You need to pay attention to clean a sofa and take care of it. Taking care and clean a sofa is quite simple, it is not too complex. To make sure sofa is clean and comfortable enough, you need to take care it regularly. You do not need to do it frequently.

Regularly, continuously, and the right process are the key of success to take care and clean a sofa.
Direct sunlight or any light that is irradiate sofas will cause sofa colors are easily faded. Sunlight and dust also cause leather and sofa’s cover get crack. Avoid placing sofas closed to light sources.
For sofas use leather as cover, you have to take care it regularly by using the special material. If sofa’s leather is affected by stain, wash it out immediately using soft sponge wetted with water and mild soap; wipe it until leather surface thoroughly dry.

Some shops are selling leather furniture cleaner and conditioner special for sofa’s leather. Use this special leather furniture cleaner and conditioner every 3 (three) months. But please be careful, not use it too often as leather surface is very sensitive to chemical liquid. Use it too often will damaged the sofa leather.

If sofa’s cover is made from fabric, try to clean it once a week with vacuum cleaner. Using vacuum cleaner will help to reduce dust on the sofa’s cover.

Sofa’s cover is an important part of sofa to be cleaned. There are 2 (two) ways to cover the sofas. Sofa’s cover that easily to clean up is the cover that can be took out from the sofas, so you can exchange with the new cover then wash out the old one. Other cover type is integrated with sofa frame. This cover type should be clean regularly with vacuum cleaner. Using vacuum cleaner to clean sofa’s cover at least once in 2 (two) weeks.

It is also important to recognize the sofa’s cover material when washing or cleaning sofas.
Usually each material needs special handling. Taking care of sofas is differentiated from many kinds of sofa’s cover.


Cotton material
It is quite easy to clean sofas with cotton material. Wash it out with water then iron it.

Polyester material
The best way to clean sofas with polyester material is with dry cleaning. Polyester material is not allowed to be exposed to water.

Silk material
Sofa is very rare covered with silk. Usually silk is more often used for curtain or sofa pillows cover. The best way to clean silk material is with dry cleaning system.

Wool material
To clean sofas with wool material, it will be safer to clean it with dry cleaning system. It is better not to use water.

Leather Material
Usually there is two (2) types of leather material using for sofa: genuine leather and synthetic leather. To clean a sofa with genuine leather material, use special leather furniture cleaner and conditioner, usually a kind of lotion; and to clean a sofa with synthetic leather material just wipe it with dry cloth or damp cloth.
